How Can I Prevent Hair Loss?

It is important to understand the causes of hair loss in order to know how to prevent or counteract it. Hair loss is genetically linked, although not only to “your mother's father” as is commonly believed. As a matter of fact, there is a four in seven chance of men inheriting a hair loss gene.

DHT is a powerful hormone which, in the case of those with a baldness gene, causes the shrinking of hair follicles. This leads to hair loss, or the growth of very fine hair, or “peach fuzz”. The end result is balding.

Although this is important in determining whether or not you lose your hair, there are other factors that can affect it. You can actually work to prevent hair loss in some very basic ways that are beneficial to your overall health anyway. Here's how.

Stress has a tendency to increase hair loss. It can be quite a contributor if you already have a history of hair loss and then experience extended high levels of stress. Keeping your life as stress free as possible is one way to keep your hair loss to a minimum.

Aerobic exercise is a great stress reducer, which will help in preventing hair loss, but beyond that, it lowers androgen, and especially free testosterone levels naturally. This is extremely helpful in creating the right hormonal balance to help prevent hair loss. This, again, is something that will improve your lifestyle and health, as well as having the added benefit of hair loss prevention.

Still, if you've inherited hair loss genes, chances are you will still experience some hair loss. If this is a problem, you might consider a topical medication that is aimed at preventing hair loss as well as encouraging hair growth. There are two FDA approved drugs, minoxidil and finasteride (sold under the names Rogaine and Propecia). These are proven effective for about half of the people who use them.

There are also laser therapies that have shown some level of effectiveness. Your doctor can help you determine which is the best for you. There are different types that are done in office by your doctor as well as at home devices you can purchase, such as a laser treatment comb.

For some people, if other treatments have proven ineffective, hair transplant may be the best option. This surgery requires taking skin containing productive hair follicles from other parts of your head, and transplanting them on the balding areas. This can be done in a few sessions or all at once. This is expensive and carries the risks and recovery of a surgery, since it is one, but it is generally effective.

Of course there are many other alternative methods said to prevent hair loss. Few of them can cause any damage and they may do some good and be worth looking into if you're looking for a different approach.
