Understanding Alopecia Hair Loss

Hair loss is something that affects millions of people across the world. It is not some great plague or something to be ashamed of. As a matter of fact, current trends are making it easier than ever for men to look good with a bald head! Even those not experiencing hair loss shave off most or all of their hair for fashion purposes!

Alopecia hair loss can be caused by genes. It is commonly believed that baldness is inherited from your mother's father. While this is certainly often the case, you can inherit hair loss genes from either side of your family. As a matter of fact, there is a four in seven chance that a man will inherit the gene for baldness.

Although it is not completely understood how it works, for those with alopecia hair loss, or male pattern baldness, DHT, a strong sex hormone, plays a large role. For some reason this hormone causes the follicles of the scalp to shrink, known as follicular miniaturization. This causes them to either stop growing hair or to grow very fine hair or peach fuzz.

For those who have inherited male pattern baldness, the hair loss may begin as early as the end of puberty. More commonly, however, it begins in the thirties. This is true in about twenty five percent of men. By the age of sixty as many as two thirds of all men have started to experience hair loss. This should make anyone who is losing their hair feel that they are in good company.

Although there is no way to completely stop hair loss, some simple changes – or improvements – in your lifestyle can benefit your overall health while at the same time helping to prevent hair loss. They involve stress and exercise.

Stress has been shown to be a contributor to hair loss. Thus, keeping your life as stress free as possible can help to reduce hair loss. Also, aerobic exercise is not only good for your overall health, as well as helping to reduce stress; it also helps to lower androgen levels naturally, which creates a good hormone balance for helping prevent hair loss.

There are some vitamins and herbs that can also help to prevent and counteract alopecia hair loss. Vitamin E helps bring blood flow to the scalp to provide nutrients as well as stimulate the growth of hair. Some herbs can be ingested or used in a preparation to also help prevent hair loss.

These are some of the basics of hair loss and what small changes you can make in your life to help counteract it. Of course, if it becomes a real problem to you and you'd like to take more assertive action, there are medications as well as treatments that can be tried on the advice of your doctor.
